Wrestling -One of the Oldest and Purest Combat Sports

Introduction

Wrestling is a powerful blend of technique, strength, endurance, and strategy, and it stands as one of the oldest forms of combat sport known to humanity. It’s been practiced since ancient times — including in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece — and remains a staple of modern-day Olympic competition.

How the Games Are Played

In wrestling, two athletes face off in a circular mat area, aiming to pin, throw, or outscore their opponent through controlled holds and movements.

There are two main Olympic styles:

  1. Freestyle Wrestling – Wrestlers can use both their upper and lower bodies for attacks and defense. Holds below the waist are allowed.

  2. Greco-Roman Wrestling – Emphasizes upper-body strength, as holds below the waist are not allowed.

Each match is divided into two or three periods, and points are awarded for:

  • Takedowns

  • Reversals

  • Exposures (turning opponent’s back to the mat)

  • Escapes

  • Pins (which end the match immediately)

Key Rules & Positions

Weight Classes:
Wrestlers compete in designated weight categories to ensure fairness.

Victory Conditions:

  • Pin (Fall): Holding both of the opponent’s shoulders on the mat.

  • Technical Superiority: Winning by a big point margin (e.g., 10+ points).

  • Points Decision: Highest score at the end of the match.

  • Disqualification/Injury: Opponent cannot continue or breaks rules.

Basic Positions:

  • Neutral: Both wrestlers standing, trying for takedowns.

  • Top/Bottom: Ground positions where one is in control and the other is trying to escape or reverse.

  • Olympic Games

  • World Wrestling Championships (UWW)

  • Continental Championships (e.g., Asian, European)

  • National Collegiate Wrestling (NCAA in the U.S.)

  • Commonwealth Games
